The origins of Digbeth-in-the-Field date back to the early 1900's when Digbeth Institute was formed by members of Carrs Lane Church to provide worship attractive to those living in the slums of Digbeth and not accustomed to attending Church. Activities included a Sunday Morning class; a Sisterhood; a Brass Band and many others. Such was its success that in 1909, two brothers were prompted to donate land in Yardley so that young people from the city centre could enjoy sporting activities in 'rural' surroundings. A pavilion was built and it was in this that, as the surrounding estate was established, a Sunday School was set up. Digbeth-in-the-Field was constituted as a church in 1938 although the name was not officially recognised until 1947. The building of the current church and facilities began in 1958. The site now comprises: the main church building which includes various smaller rooms and a kitchen and, behind the church, a spacious church hall with a stage and a number of smaller rooms and a well-equipped kitchen. Both buildings have disabled access and facilities. There is a spacious car park and a grassed recreation area for use by youth organisations. This area is also used for occasional fundraising and other special events. |
